Call for papers: 14th Annual CAFE Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS

The California Association of Freirean Educators (CAFE), and the UCLA Paulo Freire Institute (PFI)
will proudly host the 14th Annual CAFE Conference on

April 1-2, 2016

at the University of California, Los Angeles.

This year’s conference will engage the theme of

Liberatory Pedagogy: Theatre of the Oppressed.

The significant theme of CAFE 2016 Conference is to assess the continually morphing relationship between difference and inclusivity, looking particularly at theories of equity and social justice and its practical aspects in educational systems. Following the OECD’s call for 21st Century Learning, we believe that education can no longer focus on the reproduction of content knowledge. Instead, education in the network information age must evolve to make engagements in learning central, acknowledge and incorporate social and emotional learning, and promote connectedness between subjects and communities. Following Paulo Freire works, the special interest of the 2016 CAFE Conference is Liberatory Pedagogy: Theatre of the Oppressed.

Liberatory Pedagogy invites critical thinking. It is about questioning and analyzing rather than giving answers and accepting. It is about acting rather than just discussing. The Theatre of the Oppressed is a form of popular community based education that uses theatre as a tool for critical thinking and change. It is now used all over the world for educational changes, social and political activism, conflict resolution, community building, therapy, and even government legislation. The 2016 CAFE Conference aims to: 1) foster a common understanding of concepts and debates related to Liberatory Pedagogy and to the Theatre of the Oppressed, 2) develop links between research and practice, and 3) enable the sharing of innovative initiatives in this regard. This event is an inclusive interdisciplinary project. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions, which are innovative and exciting. It particularly encourages researchers, scholars, and educators working in/with diverse schools to describe, analyze and reflect on their experiences or research in the field.

Papers are invited on any areas related to the Theatre of the Oppressed and resisting oppression based on any biological, social and cultural categories such as gender, race, class, ability, sexual orientation, religion, caste, age and other axes of identity.
